Avatar on the IMAX

I saw Avatar on the IMAX in Manchester a couple of weeks ago. I went back a second time, largely because of a six year old boy pandering to go “again, again.” I loved it the first time around and loved it more the second.

What I’m finding interesting is the fact that most reviews I am hearing from non-virtual world players are more positive than those I am hearing from virtual world enthusiasts. Does it touch a nerve, perhaps, with virtual world players when the film touches on the topic of the real world and the ‘virtual’ one becoming confused? Maybe it wasn’t what virtual worlds players were expecting? Although, to be fair, reviews from both SL-ers and non-SL-ers alike are far, far more positive than otherwise.

I’m not a film critic. Nor do I care to litter a blog post with spoilers for anyone who does care to go see it, but the film is immense. I am generally not a fan of big budget blockbusters (largely because I find that expensive special effects are often just a means of hiding a lacklustre screenplay). But this breaks rules for me. It’s had a record breaking budget of almost $300 million and had had 12 years of work put into it. But I thought the graphics were incredible, absolutely stunning. The screenplay was immensely well put together, the soundtrack was superb (I love the work of James Horner and have been a fan since ‘A Beautiful Mind’) and the cast were awesome. No complaints from me. Wow… that’s unusual.

  • “A six year old boy pandering to go “again, again.””

If children’s services ever finds you, it’s over buddy. Unless pandering means something else where you call home like “fit”.

They kept saying “that girl is so fit” on The Inbetweeners and I was so very confused thinking the britz must be very obsessed with health.

  • Oh man, I really want to see this in the Manc Imax but time and health have buggered it up for me – hopefully I’ll get chance soon :)

  • ROFL Adric. The Inbetweeners is frikkin awesome!!

Yeh, HeadBurro… it’s the Manc one I went to. Love the IMAX but never seen anything like Avatar on it. So much better when it’s a film specifically made for that type of technology.

  • Yes, Jay is really the star of the show, but the others are okay.
