Crazy Money in Virtual Worlds?
Some guy just spent $330000 USD on a space station in Entropia Universe.
Ummm… when did the world get this crazy? Actually, scratch that. The world IS crazy. But when did people start having enough money to just blow on virtual stuff? Granted, he will make small amounts of money, as I understand it, from people hunting in its grounds and from transactions on the space station itself. But seriously. If the guy has $330k lying around doing nothing in his bank account, why doesn’t he go buy a house to rent out or something?
Wow.
Speaking of Entropia Universe, did anyone else try that game? I did. I lasted an hour. Then I uninstalled it.

I’ve been in Entropia (now called Planet Calypso) for almost 3 years. I only go in about once a month to pay my rent and feed my pets. It’s a difficult game to learn. I laugh when people talk about the learning curve in SL. As for the money spent on the latest space station – they will make it back and then some. But yes, it’s an insane amount.

“Value” is a concept that is very personal. For example, I find it amazing that some folks will spend thousands of dollars per year for the opportunity to walk around a huge field using sticks to hit small balls into 18 small holes, but doubtless the people doing this would disagree.
Also the notion of “cost” is relative. $330K may be not horrendous if the person earns $500K per year, has lots of savings, and feels that they can get money back on that investment.
So although it seems incredibly weird, it may well be perfectly reasonable to the person spending the cash – and certainly isn’t an issue to seller
