Second Life Adoption
Wednesday, December 30th, 2009I’ve made no secret about how confused I am over child avatars, particularly those with speech impediments (‘hewwwwwoooooooo’). However, what confuses me more is the ‘adoption’ process of child avatars in Second Life.
So, you can always argue that roleplaying is a part of a virtual world. Some people play furries, nekos, vampires etc, so roleplaying a child, from that angle, might not be much different. Except that, in my opinion, it’s weird and creepy that any grown man or woman would want to run around pretending to be three again. But whatever.
What is with the adoption thing? Most of the Second Life ‘parents’ I have spoken to treat their children in world as though they are their RL children – financially too. So basically little child avie (who might well be a fifty year old obese unemployed man sitting at his computer typing in ‘kid speak’) pays nothing and gets given his land/place to ‘live’ and everything he wants in world. I don’t get it. I just do not get it at all. I do know one or two ‘children’ who do insist on paying their way, so I don’t deny that there are those who do. But it seems there are more who don’t. Is this not just a way for someone to have everything they want in world paid for without having to do a thing for it except spew out some badly spelled, entirely fake child like phrase of affection once in a while? I mean, come on! Get real.
Parents – your child is not a cute four year old girl with pigtails. It’s an old bloke pretending to be a little girl instead of spending some time in counselling addressing the issues that cause him to want to be a cute little girl.
Anyway, that’s my two Lindens on the matter.
Yawn… what’s everyone doing for New Years?
